TOC’s Commitment to Education: San Antonio

San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC)

The physicians at TOC Eye and Face have a long standing commitment to education. In addition to an internationally recognized and accredited fellowship program, the physicians at TOC are devoted to sharing knowledge and experience with physicians in residency training.  On Tuesday 10/20, Drs. Shore, Bratton, and Vrcek traveled to San Antonio to serve as guest lecturers and instructors for the 20th Annual Orbital/Facial Anatomy and Dissection Course at the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC).  Dr. Shore was honored with the invitation to lecture to Ophthalmology residents at the new combined United States Air Force and Army training facility, as well as residents and fellows in Army and Air Force Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Otolaryngology, and Oculofacial Plastic Surgery training programs.  Residents from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio were also in attendance.

Following the lecture, Drs. Shore, Bratton, and Vrcek served as instructors in the orbital/facial anatomy and dissection course, teaching the finer points of anatomy in the eyelids, face, and orbit.  The occasion was an opportunity for Dr. Bratton to re-unite with one of her colleagues from her time at the University of Colorado, Dr. Brett Davies, a Major and Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon in the United States Air Force who trained with one of TOC’s current partners,  Dr. Vik Durairaj.   Dr. Davies recently returned from deployment to Afghanistan to rejoin his Air Force and Army colleagues as Chief of Oculofacial Plastic and Orbital Surgery at SAMMC.  Dr. Shore is the former Department Chairman and Residency Program Director of the now merged training program.
