Prosthetic Eyes / Artificial Eyes

The loss of an eye from injury, infection or other cause is unpleasant and upsetting. However, it need not remain so. A prosthetic eye can appear real, and new technology has made prosthetic eyes capable of movement that seems natural. Many people wear artificial eyes with great success for many years, but sometimes surgical attention is needed to correct side effects of wearing the prosthesis.

Some problems associated with long-term use of an artificial eye are sagging lower eyelids caused by the weight of the eye (ectropion), a sunken appearance of the eye, a drooping upper eyelid (ptosis), or displacement (looseness) of the artificial eye in the socket. Displacement may be caused by shrinkage or loss of the shape of the eye socket and changes in the implant due to infection or exposure, which may require implant replacement.

As our patient you or your loved one will receive evaluation and treatment by one of our elite oculoplastic surgeons, each with advanced specialized credentials, who will provide you with the uncompromising care and extraordinary results we are known for. We offer advanced implants that enhance the movement of artificial eyes and we work closely with ocularists committed to the same uncompromising patient care before and after implant surgery to ensure extraordinary functional and cosmetic results.

Most procedures may be performed in an ambulatory surgery center setting. Outpatient (ambulatory) surgery helps to reduce hospital costs, personal expense, and length of stay for patients needing surgery. For those times when surgery is best performed at a hospital, TOC physicians have surgical privileges at all Austin-area hospitals and many ambulatory surgery centers.

We understand that any patient may feel anxious or apprehensive about treatment. Our goal is to help you or your loved one feel at ease. We engage each patient with sensitivity and respect for his or her individual needs.
