Genioplasty is a surgical procedure that changes the position and shape of the chin (mandible) by cutting the front portion of the lower jawbone and sliding it forward, backward, upward, downward, or sometimes to the side. The repositioned bone is then secured with plates and screws. It is primarily used to correct chin position and facial proportions, rather than to change the bite.
It can correct receding chin (retrognathia/microgenia), prominent chin, vertical chin excess or deficiency, facial asymmetry, and chin contour and lower-face proportions. Unlike a chin implant, sliding genioplasty uses the patient’s own bone and allows movement in multiple directions.
