Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive, endonasal surgical procedure used to restore normal sinus drainage and ventilation in patients with chronic or recurrent sinonasal disease that has not responded adequately to medical therapy.
Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is performed through the nasal cavities using a rigid endoscope and angled instrumentation. The surgeon identifies and preserves the normal sinonasal anatomy while removing obstructing or diseased tissue and enlarging the natural sinus drainage pathways. Depending on the extent of disease, this may include uncinectomy, maxillary antrostomy, anterior and/or posterior ethmoidectomy, sphenoidotomy, and frontal sinusotomy. The goal is to restore sinus ventilation and drainage while preserving mucosa and normal anatomy whenever possible.
